The Rega Planar 6 RS is a carefully judged step-up from the already excellent Planar 6, bringing trickle-down engineering from Rega’s higher-end decks into a more attainable package. The headline upgrade is the inclusion of the RB880 tonearm, a design normally reserved for the Planar 8. This arm uses a precision, zero-tolerance bearing assembly with improved vertical bearings and ultra-low friction movement, allowing it to extract significantly more detail from the groove while maintaining exceptional tracking stability . Compared to the standard RB330, the RB880 offers greater rigidity and reduced play, translating into cleaner transients, better stereo imaging, and a more composed presentation overall.

The Planar 6 RS Edition adopts many key components from the next tier Planar 8 model whilst retaining the classic Rega form factor and dustcover. The ultra lightweight high rigidity plinth makes the perfect platform to mount the advanced RB880 tonearm which is factory mounted and aligned by our experts with the multi-award winning Nd9 moving magnet cartridge.

Classic styling, serious performer

At the cartridge end, the Planar 6 RS is fitted with Rega’s flagship Nd9 moving magnet cartridge, which plays a major role in elevating performance. Built with a low-inductance generator and a fine line nude diamond stylus—often paired with a lightweight boron cantilever—the Nd9 delivers excellent high-frequency extension, improved channel balance, and a high level of detail retrieval . This synergy between the RB880 and Nd9 creates a front-end that punches well above its price point, offering a level of resolution and refinement typically associated with more expensive turntables.

Underpinning these upgrades is Rega’s core design philosophy: low mass, high rigidity, and vibration control. The RS retains the ultra-light Tancast 8 foam core plinth with high-pressure laminate skins, along with the double-brace architecture that reinforces the critical tonearm and bearing areas. A dual-layer float glass platter provides rotational stability, while the Neo PSU Mk2 ensures precise electronic speed control and reduced motor vibration . The addition of dual drive belts in the RS version further improves speed consistency and reduces micro-variations, helping the deck deliver a more stable and natural musical flow.
