The second generation of the Sonetto range has landed at Soundline and we’ve been enjoying some quality time with them. Now that they’ve had some time to run in and we’re more familiar with them, we thought it would be a great time to start making some comparisons. Often in a range like this, there is a sweet spot where the perfect combination of size, price and sound meet to produce a speaker that really stands out and becomes a favourite of our customers.
We convened our panel of experts and began with an inter-generational comparison (both speakers and our experts..), the Sonetto V G1 up against the new G2 version. First impressions were of an improvement in mid-range clarity and openness which is in line with expectations, given the presence of the Camelia mid-driver that is also found in the highest-end Suprema series. A big improvement in sound stage width and depth was something noted by all of our test subjects.
Having decided that the new generation is indeed an upgrade, we started looking at some of the other models in the G2 range, firstly the Sonetto III G2. Good performance in both high and low ends were noted, but again it was the outstanding mid-range performance of the Sonetto V G2 that again drew comment. The Sonetto V G2 also seemed to do a better job of disappearing into the room, with a wide and detailed soundstage. Interestingly, there was mention that they out performed the Sonetto VIII G2 in this respect, although this was countered by the VIII’s having some more presence and weight. One thing that was highlighted by this exercise is the need to provide adequate amplification when running speakers of this size. The Accuphase E-800 isn’t exactly short on power but it’s possible that the Sonetto VIII G2 could have benefited from even more of it. Knowing what equipment works well together is one of the benefits of working with a knowledgeable audio dealer and this is a great example of that.
Conclusions then, were that the Sonetto V G2 is probably our favourite of the range so far (or at least favourite of the floorstanding options). The midrange was definitely the highlight for us and something we encourage you to experience for yourself. The beautiful design and flawless finish is of course shared across the entire range, and indeed all Sonus faber speakers. Ciao Bella!
Improved drivers
The Sonetto G2 introduces a revolutionary Camellia mid-range driver, which has moved away from the traditional rounded membrane to a new design featuring five cuts on its perimeter. This change is not only aesthetic but also functional, aiming to improve sound clarity and detail. This new mid-range design, first showcased in the Suprema model, is now being standardised across the new Sonetto floorstanding range.
The construction of the Sonetto G2 speakers reflects Sonus faber's dedication to using only the finest materials. The cabinets, crafted from high-quality wood, exude a sense of timeless elegance. A new addition to the G2 series is the integration of a concrete base, significantly enhancing stability and minimising unwanted vibrations that can colour the sound. This robust foundation allows the speakers to perform with greater accuracy and control, revealing the nuances and subtleties in the music. The meticulous wood grain further enhances the visual appeal of these exceptional speakers.
Meticulous design
Beyond the sonic improvements, the Sonetto G2 series showcases thoughtful design refinements. Classic Sonus faber design cues, such as the 45° angled top wood finish, are present, lending a sense of familiarity and heritage. However, the G2 series also introduces new design elements, including a round binding post cover adorned with the Sonus faber logo, showcasing the brand's attention to even the smallest details. The metal finished rings surrounding each driver add a touch of sophistication, while the single driver dust grills protect the delicate drivers without compromising sonic performance.
